Auto Typing Points
Auto Type suggests a point type for every untyped point on a source map, so you can review and accept them instead of assigning each one by hand.
Point names come from whoever installed the equipment, and they are
rarely tidy — ZN-T, DPR-O, SA-F,
sometimes just AI-1. Auto Type reads the name, unit,
enumerated states, address and attached equipment, then proposes the
closest Novant point type. You decide what to keep.
Running Auto Type
- Navigate to Sources in your project.
- Open the source map you want to type.
- Click Auto Type.
- Review each suggestion and choose Accept, Revise, or Skip.
- Click Apply to write your decisions to the source map.
Nothing is saved until you click Apply. Closing the dialog or clicking Cancel discards everything.
What You’ll See
Only points that don’t have a type yet appear in the dialog. Points you’ve already typed are left alone, so you can run Auto Type again after adding points to a map without revisiting earlier work.
Each row shows the suggested type and a confidence indicator:

| High | Strong match — usually correct, still worth a glance |
| Medium | Plausible match — read it before accepting |
| Low | Weak match — treat it as a starting point, not an answer |
Confidence reflects how much evidence the point’s name and metadata
gave. A point named ZN-T with units of degF is
easy; one named AI-1 with no description is not.
Accepting, Revising and Skipping
Accept takes the suggested type as-is.
Revise opens a list of alternatives, ranked by how well each one fits. If the right type isn’t among them, choose Show All to browse the full list of Novant point types.
Skip leaves the point untyped. Use it when you’re unsure — an untyped point is easier to find later than a wrong one.
You can change any decision before applying. Points you haven’t decided on are left untyped.
Getting Better Suggestions
Two things make a noticeable difference:
Bind equipment to the source map. Auto Type uses the attached equipment as a clue. A damper on a VAV is almost always a command; the same point name with nothing attached is ambiguous. See Binding Sources.
Include descriptions. Many controllers expose an unhelpful point name alongside a useful description. Auto Type reads both, so importing descriptions with your points helps — particularly for devices that name points
AI-1,AI-2and so on.
Notes
- Auto Type suggests; it never types points on its own. Every point that changes does so because you accepted or revised it.
- Suggestions improve over time. The underlying model is retrained regularly from point types across the Novant network, so a source map typed today may get better suggestions next month.
- Auto Type works on any source map regardless of protocol — BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA and the rest all use the same point types.
