Sizing Your Project
Understanding the size of your project helps you estimate what you’ll be connecting and ensure your organization’s plan supports your needs. The two primary dimensions are data points and assets.
If you’re not sure about your exact numbers yet, that’s fine — you can start small and scale up as needed. You don’t need a complete count to get started.
Data Points
Data points are the inputs, outputs, and setpoints from your building management system (BMS). This is typically the biggest factor in sizing your project.
To estimate your point count:
- Identify your BMS and protocol — for example, Siemens Desigo CC (BACnet), Niagara N4, Alerton (BACnet), Schneider (Modbus), etc.
- Get a points list — request this from your BMS provider or pull it from BMS graphics. This gives you the total number of data points available.
- Decide what to connect — you may not need every point. Start with the data that matters most for your use case and expand from there.
If you don’t have a points list yet, you can still get started and increase your point allocation as you learn more about the system.
Assets
Assets are the pieces of equipment in your building that you want to track in Novant — HVAC units, electrical panels, fire systems, and so on.
You don’t need a complete asset inventory to begin. Starting with the equipment that matters most for your goals keeps the initial setup focused and manageable. You can always add more assets later.
Supported Protocols
Novant supports the following protocols for live data connections:
- BACnet
- Modbus
- OPC UA
- Niagara (via Jasper)
- Manual ingestion
If your protocol isn’t listed, contact support@novant.io — additional protocols are being added regularly.
Choosing a Plan
Plans are managed at the organization level and determine the total capacity available across all your projects. Visit the Novant Pricing Page for current plans and limits, or contact support@novant.io to discuss your needs.
