Setting Up Your Hardware Node
Pre-Installation Checklist
Before installing your hardware node, confirm the following:
- Available Ethernet port on the building automation network
- Power outlet near the installation location (standard AC outlet for the included wall adapter)
- Outbound HTTPS access to
node.novant.io(port 443) - Static IP address from IT, if required (DHCP is the default)
What’s Included
- Hardware node
- AC/DC wall adapter (5V DC)
- Ethernet cable
Physical Installation
Mounting
The hardware node has an integrated 35mm DIN rail mount clip.
To mount: Latch the bottom of the clip onto the rail and press up to engage the spring. Rotate the top of the clip over the rail and release to lock in place.
To dismount: Press up to engage the spring and release the clip.
Power and Network
- Connect the AC/DC wall adapter to the node and plug into a power outlet.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from the node to the building automation network.
- The node will boot automatically once power is applied.
Project Association
Hardware nodes are automatically associated with your Novant project — no license file or manual registration is required. Once the node is online and connected to the internet, it will appear in your project’s Settings > Nodes tab.
Network Configuration
The hardware node defaults to DHCP and will automatically obtain an IP address from your network. If DHCP is available, no additional network configuration is needed — skip to Verification.
If your site requires a static IP, you can configure it through the node’s built-in Wi-Fi access point. This is the only way to change network settings on the hardware node — there is no physical display or interface on the device itself.
Configuring a Static IP
On first boot, the access point activates automatically and remains active for 15 minutes. After that window closes, reset the node (see Reset Network Settings) to reactivate it.
- Find the AP in your Wi-Fi settings. The SSID is formatted as
Novant-N1-{serial}. - Enter the node’s access key as the Wi-Fi password. The access key is available under Settings > Nodes in your Novant project. Access keys rotate automatically every 30 days.
- Open a web browser and navigate to
192.168.9.1. - Switch the network mode from DHCP to static IP and enter the address, subnet mask, and gateway provided by your IT team.
Verification
Once the node is powered on and connected to the network, check the LED indicators and your Novant dashboard to confirm everything is working.
LED Status
| Green LED | Red LED | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| OFF | Solid ON | Powered on, charging super-capacitors. Boot may take several minutes if capacitors are fully depleted. |
| Slow Blink | Slow Blink | Runtime is booting and searching for an IP address. |
| Solid ON | Slow Blink | Valid IP address, but cannot reach Novant. Check internet connectivity, firewall rules, and network routing. |
| Solid ON | OFF | Operating normally. |
Novant Dashboard
- Log into your Novant project.
- Go to the Nodes tab.
- Confirm the node appears as “Online.”
If the node does not come online, check the LED status table above and verify network connectivity and firewall rules.
Managing the Node
Reset Network Settings
Use the hardware reset button to restore network settings to the factory default (DHCP). The reset button is located on the left side of the node.
Press and hold the reset button for approximately 10 seconds using a paperclip until both LEDs flash three times. Release the button when the LEDs turn off. The node will reboot in DHCP mode and the Wi-Fi access point will activate for 15 minutes.
Powering Off and Restarting
To power off, disconnect the power supply at any time. The green LED will stay lit briefly during a graceful shutdown — the node is fully powered down once all LEDs are off.
To restart, reconnect the power supply.
