Node Setup
Your Novant Node must be placed on the same network as the building devices it needs to communicate with. Proper placement ensures reliable data flow and system performance. The right location depends on your building’s network architecture and how devices are segmented.
Where to Install My Node?
Typical installation points include:
- Building Automation Network: Connect to the same network as your BMS controllers
- Control Network: Usually separate from general office Wi-Fi or guest networks
- Equipment Room: Near building automation equipment with network access
- IT Closet: On a dedicated switch that connects to the building network
Single Network Setup
If all your building devices are on one network, install the node on that network with either:
- Direct connection to an available Ethernet port
- Connection through a network switch
- Virtual node hosted on a system with network access
Multiple Network Setup
For buildings with separate networks (BAS, lighting, metering, corporate IT):
- Install separate nodes on each relevant network segment
- Multiple nodes can connect through the Novant cloud
- Coordinate with IT to determine optimal placement
Key Questions to Ask Your IT Team:
- “Which network should I connect the Node to so it can reach the building devices?”
- “What subnet are the building devices on, and can the Node be placed in the same one?”
- “Do I need a dedicated port or VLAN for the Node?”
- “If we have multiple networks, should we install a node per subnet?”
